A group of seven accused members of German far-left group stand trial over series of attacks

Seven individuals accused of being the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network went on trial on this week, facing charges for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that resulted in the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

Global terrorist designation and prosecution case

Recently, the US government classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization along with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors claim the network was responsible for targeting sites in the country and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of employing hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several severely injured.

Trial details and international connections

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, around an yearly gathering called the “day of honor” that draws rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T., is facing trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted violent acts against far-right activists prior to the same rally in 2023.

Historical background and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has long been a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a senior figure within the organization, responsible for planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M, he is accused of organizing instruction courses where radical left activists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. At depots overseen by the suspect, the group reportedly stockpiled hammers, pepper spray, disguises and mobile phones.

Prior legal cases and global responses

A different activist previously active with the organization, Lina E, emerged as a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation renders organization affiliates ineligible to enter the United States, blocks financial holdings they may have within the American economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany applauded the US decision and urged the German administration to follow suit. However, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The threat from the organization has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and particularly violent members have either received convictions or remain detained.”
